This summer, PlayStation is acquiring its 14th Studio and third season after purchasing UK-based developers Firesprite.
This acquisition rather came as a surprise, given the scale of the team. The Firesprite team totals 250 employees, which is larger than PlayStation’s other two UK-based studios- Media Molecule and London Studio combined.
Firesprite is a Liverpool-based studio founded in 2012 and has collaborated with PlayStation on several occasions. The acquisition of Firesprite might mean there is a high chance PlayStation’s next-gen VR program might get a major boost. Let’s look at the prospects this acquisition would guarantee for PlayStation.

PlayStation acquires Firesprite – A rejuvenation for the VR program?
Firesprite, a UK Based Studio, had previously collaborated with PlayStation on several titles, such as Playroom (PS4) and The Playroom VR (PS VR). They also had the opportunity to create their own IP, The Persistence, for PlayStation.
Previously, PlayStation had mentioned on their blog page that there wouldn’t be any events related to next-gen VRs at the upcoming PS showcase. This does not mean that PS isn’t developing with this idea. They are definitely going to make a big announcement for their VR models very soon.

Hermen Hulst, Head of PS Studios, says, “Firesprite is a creative and ambitious studio that is exceptional at building incredible experiences that truly showcase the potential of our hardware. The team’s technical and creative capabilities will be paramount to growing our stellar catalog of exclusive games, and I think you’ll be excited for what’s to come.”
Given that Firesprite has worked with PS on several VR-related projects, this acquisition is undoubtedly a move to bolster the VR Program.
Graeme Ankers, MD of Firespirite, said on the PlayStation blogsite “We can’t wait to show you what we have been working on…we’re just getting started!”
