The year 2023 has indeed been a great one for gamers. This year we got so many stellar releases like Starfield and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Meanwhile, there have also been some outstanding video-game adaptations like Super Mario Bros. and The Last of Us. Joining that list is a movie based on the indie horror game, Five Nights at Freddy’s.

The grand reception for this movie came as a surprise to many fans, as it was made on a limited budget of $20 million. Despite that, the movie has become a blockbuster success, earning over $200 million worldwide. A question that arises after the success of Five Nights at Freddy’s is whether fans will be getting more indie game-based movies or shows.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie crossed the $200 million worldwide mark, marching towards the $250 million mark. This goes to show how much the fans are loving this horror movie. The recipe for making this movie was also a simple one. The storyline was supplied by the indie title and was mixed with the horror elements that people love. After sprinkling some guest appearances from YouTubers, the movie has become a fan favorite.

This love from fans stems back to the success of the indie game. The indie game Five Nights at Freddy’s has enjoyed a cult following since its release. People praised the storyline and horror of the game, with many critics calling it the best indie horror game. Looking at the success of the indie game-based movie, Matthew Lillard confirmed there is a three-film contract in the works.

Even movie director Emma Tammi hinted at a potential sequel. She recently said, “We’ll see how things go this weekend. We’re excited to keep making more movies in this world, should we be lucky enough to do that. This one was tied into the first game, and we would probably focus on tying the second one into the second game, and so on. But anything could happen. We’ll have to see.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s has enough source material to spawn multiple sequels. However, is there a possibility it will spawn other indie game-based movies and shows? There are many indie games out there that would be outstanding as video-game adaptations.
