HBO’s The Last of Us series was naturally a success. It was not a surprise to anyone that it had such a wide audience. It was a brilliantly made project, and the creators knew exactly what the audience would appreciate.
Adding new things to such a series usually works as a way to give some more exposition. Those things even work in terms of world-building. But Pedro Pascal’s recent interview with Variety reveals that the upcoming season two of this series will do much more than just add more stuff!

The Last of Us series from the creator of HBO’s Chernobyl Craig Mazin was a revelation to many. It’s not every day that an excellent story from video games transitions so effortlessly to another medium. In fact, the games usually end up being pretty bad films or series, with only a few exceptions.
The cast and crew have already been teasing the upcoming season and what direction it might take. Pedro Pascal did something similar during his recent interview with Variety. When the conversation shifted to the second season of the series, the interviewer decided to get some information on the second season.
He asked if Pedro was aware of what happened to Joel in The Last of Us Part II. Pedro, of course, knows, plays around with the topic a little, and agrees. Then he is asked if his character also dies very early in season 2 of the series. And if the series would see a time jump like the game.

Pedro was pretty quick to answer this question, but his answer was pretty cryptic. He talked about how the creators of Narcos realized too late how popular the character of Pablo Escobar had gotten. And they showed too much of his story in season one and had to kill him off in season two.
Then he moved on to talking about the sequel to the game. He explains that the second game in the series was pretty open-ended. He says that he had heard about things happening to the central characters of the game, but it seems like it’s a bit more open. In his own words, “It’s a different immersive experience; while there are things that have to happen for this central narrative to occur, it seems like it’s a little bit more open.”

It appears that he is trying to say “Joel dies, but not at the very beginning“. This makes sense too; he compares Joel’s popularity to that of Pablo in Narcos. And he hints that his character has been expanded in season two. Well, that’s good news for all the Joel fans out there. Although readers will understand that he is just hinting at this. These hints and winks can only be speculated upon for now. Fans will get their ultimate answer as soon as this series goes into production.
