However, the hardcore fans still stood by the game as they expected the game to resonate decently with the FPS fanatics over time. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case as Payday 3 turns one month old, and it is turning to be a ‘failed successor.’

According to Steam analytics, the third part accounts for only 4,000 concurrent players each day just a month after its release. In the last few days, a large number of players decided to abandon the game, resulting in its strong fall in ranking. The title averages almost 85% lower player base than its massively successful predecessor. A Reddit user addressed the concern of the fall through their post.

The decade-old release Payday 2 was among the most celebrated heist co-op games of its time. Moreover, the sequel strongly remains in the top-tier FPS heist experiences to date. With a lot of interesting innovations introduced in the 2013 sequel, the title took the standards of the franchise to a whole new level. Thus, the expectations with Payday 3 were sky high and after all the wait, it just felt like an underwhelming experience.

On the contrary, Payday 2 has witnessed a surge in popularity over the last few weeks. A reason for this could be fans wanting to revisit the decade-old classic after being disappointed with the third installment’s experience. The second installment also recorded a higher active player count than its successor in the given month.
The issues with the latest release
Some of the early problems with Payday 3 matchmaking, according to the game’s developer Starbreeze, were brought on by a “software update” that was implemented by a “third-party matchmaking partner.” “Evaluating a new partner for matchmaking services and making Payday 3 less dependent on online services,” is what Starbreeze claims to be working on.

Players frequently bemoan the challenges they have when playing Payday 3, and one of their top demands is the addition of an offline option. That way, Payday 3 players may still play the heists alone in spite of the server and matchmaking issues. Starbreeze is currently trying to get Payday 3’s matchmaking stable, but it hasn’t said whether it intends to provide an offline mode.
