These are some of the characters who can be assessed regarding their subversions and lore within Elden Ring.

1. Starscourge Radahn

As we can see in this picture and from his intimidating title ‘Starscourge’, Radahn in no way seems to be a benevolent figure. Depending on the sequence of play, he is usually the third demi-god that most players will fight and takes the role of Elden Ring’s resident raid boss.

However, if we look at his lore, we can see that despite his evil appearance, he was arguably one of the noblest characters of the game. A mighty warrior and battlefield commander, his remembrance states that his mastery of ‘Gravity Magic’ did not come from a desire to become more powerful in combat. However, this mastery came from his desire not to have to abandon his beloved childhood companion- his faithful horse Leonard.

We even see that during his boss fight, despite being driven mad due to Malenia’s Scarlet Rot, he still uses the bulk of his power to hold back a colossal cosmic storm from bombarding the Lands Between, just out of his love for the people of his province of Caelid.

2. Morgott, The Omen King

If one looks at the ‘Shattering’, the civil war that starts off the game’s events, it is, in a nutshell, a family squabble. While the others participate out of a hunger for power, Morgott’s only participation was to protect the royal capital of Leyndell.

Born an Omen, Morgott’s rise as the King of Leyndell itself comes off as a subversion of expectations as Omens are usually abandoned at birth and thrown away into the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. However, he was one of the few who escaped this fate, being loved by the royal family and repaying their trust in full despite his eventual failure.

3. Preceptor Seluvis

In a break from the previous two discussed characters, Seluvis initially might come off as a friendly character, aligned with a faction essential for one of the endings. However, if his quest-line is followed, we soon find a shocking truth hidden behind his seemingly well-meaning behavior.

Seluvis is implied to have links to another secondary character- Pidia, a merchant found in the Academy of Raya Lucaria, as is shown by the Nepheli Loux puppet summon he sells, which forms a part of Seluvis’ questline.

Considering the potions he makes for Nepheli and Ranni, there is a possible implication that he is a serial offender on several grounds which makes his eventual end at the hands of the Black Knife Assassins all the more satisfying.
