When you hear Nintendo’s “Mario“, you normally think of an adventurous plumber on his quest to rescue the kidnapped princess. However, there’s one character in Super Mario Galaxy who just might break your heart with her back story. Rosalina first appeared in Nintendo‘s Super Mario Galaxy in 2007 and since then fans have witnessed her epic journey across multiple titles.

Rosalina was the adoptive mother of Luma, a star creature. Rosalina’s quest to help Luma find its mother has some background context that will definitely make you feel bad for the princess, who is also speculated to be the mother of Princess Peaches.

How Rosalina came to adopt a Luma

Rosalina made her debut in 2007 on Nintendo Super Mario Galaxy. As you progress through the game, you get to learn more about her. At the end of the game, it’s revealed that Rosalina is possibly just a child from Earth. However, stumbling upon a spaceship in her backyard changed her life altogether, which saw her traveling through space with a Luma. The star creature, originally named Lumalee, is a lost creature from outer space who’s stuck on Earth with no idea what to do.

Rosalina finds the Luma, a “star child“, in the spaceship. She learns that the creature has been waiting for its mother for a whole day and night. The Luma also tells her that its mother is on her way for her child on Earth. As most Lumas make their homes in Comet Observatory, the lost Luma didn’t know how to manage on its own. Hearing the sad story, Rosalina decided to adopt it and help the star creature on its quest to find its mother.

However, Rosalina may have held some pivotal information back from the Luma, which easily makes her story one of the saddest in the Mario universe.

Rosalina’s tragic past

Rosalina and the Luma boarded the spaceship to find its mother on a comet somewhere in space. They searched for days and months in vain. During the journey, Rosalina gradually tells Luma about her life and how she lost her mother as well. But Rosalina’s mother was gone forever, never to be found again.

As they traveled deeper into space, Rosalina lost her way and couldn’t get back home as well. She lost touch with her family. However, she did take up the role of a surrogate mother for the Lumas, nurturing them till they matured into celestial beings. Rosalina’s sacrifice and resilience against her own personal tragedy made her a character with depth. Her story breaks hearts as she strives to bring joy to the lives of others.
