Nintendo is one of the oldest console manufacturers in the history of gaming. It never fell short when it came to innovation in technology. Its Gamecube was also a product of such innovative thinking.
This cube-shaped console used mini discs as its media and was home to some of the most innovative Nintendo first-party titles. And now there’s news that Nintendo might have been planning a very unusual add-on for this console, but maybe they decided to cancel it due to some unexplained reason.

During E3 2002, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, Satoru Iwata, and Bill Trinen took charge of showing off a bunch of GameCube games and accessories. Once the show was almost over, Iwata came forward and said they had one last thing to show.
And then they revealed a detachable LCD display for their then-brand-new console. By all accounts, the console was no stranger to weird add-ons. Let us not forget those useful but curious Game Boy accessories.
And just like that, the Gamecube was all set to be paired with a 5-inch 4:3 LCD display. Gamers who loved using that carrying handle on this console would have loved that screen, even if it had a resolution of 320 x 240.

Something is better than nothing, so fans were pretty hyped for that display from the get-go. But it never made it to the market. The reason for it being the high cost of developing LCD displays. Years later, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata also revealed that this display had glass-less 3D capabilities.
It’s weird how Nintendo’s infatuation with 3D technology has been so consistent. First, they built the Virtual Boy, a console with an inbuilt 3D display. Then came this Gamecube display, which was 3D capable too. And finally came the one time when they actually succeeded: when they launched the Nintendo 3DS consoles.
