Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, and it was lauded for its ability to give players the freedom to play anywhere. Eventually, console warriors started calling this console underpowered. Even though Nintendo hardly focused on power, fans were pissed they made an underpowered console.

The Switch has quickly become a go-to console for many gamers who wanted more wiggle room in their gaming sessions. They wanted a console that allowed them to play home console-tier games wherever they wanted.

Nintendo Switch leaves behind Sony’s PlayStation 4 in sales numbers!

Nintendo’s hybrid console is on the last leg of its long fruitful journey. The console over the years has been home to a bunch of uber-successful games. A bunch of games stepped into the high definition with this console too. Games like Metroid, Metroid Prime, and Pokemon RPG saw a lot of HD installments.

And that’s why it’s not very surprising that this console has sold more units than PlayStation 4 has in its lifetime. We must not forget that Sony’s PlayStation 4 was launched back in 2013, four years before Switch. And it still has not been completely discontinued.

That means it continues selling alongside Sony’s current-gen offering PlayStation 5. As per the latest reports, by the end of 2022, Nintendo Switch had sold around 122.5 million units. With this, the console has effectively beaten the 117.2 million units of PlayStation 4. And this has made Nintendo Switch the third best-selling console of all time. The only two that remain at the top are Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with 154.02 million and 158.7 million respectively.

Would this run continue?

No one is seeing this accomplishment as a surprise, but everyone cannot help but wonder if this success would last. Currently, Nintendo and its console are at an impasse. Even though they keep releasing best-selling games every few months, there are still people asking Nintendo to reveal its next console.

With this pressure on the rise and with Nintendo running out of big system sellers, the reveal of a new console is bound to happen. Though its time frame is something no one is sure of. So if Nintendo ends up releasing a new console, the growth of Switch will be slowed down. It happens to be seen if the console’s remaining period is enough for it to grab the podium.
