Recently, Sakurai embarked on a personal venture by launching his own video documentary series on YouTube. Through this platform, he offers a glimpse into his life as a top-tier game developer and shares captivating behind-the-scenes stories. In a recent episode, Sakurai took the opportunity to delve into his favorite game from his childhood days.

Titled “Games During My Childhood [Grab Bag],” Sakurai’s latest video sheds light on his early experiences and cherished memories. He fondly recalls how, as a child, his parents would take him shopping. While they attended to their errands, young Sakurai would eagerly receive 200 yen and promptly make a beeline for the nearest arcade. However, faced with the dilemma of choosing among the array of enticing games, each costing 50 yen, he could only afford to play four during each visit.

As time went on, Sakurai’s passion for gaming grew, particularly with the advent of the Famicom home console. He immersed himself in a plethora of games on the system, including iconic titles like Dragon Quest, Mother, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and many more. These experiences served as the catalyst for his aspirations to become a game developer.

Sakurai’s journey in the video game industry commenced during his tenure at HAL Laboratory. It was there, at the young age of 19, that he created the beloved character Kirby and directed his legendary creation, Kirby’s Dream Land.

In a notable interview with Famitsu magazine, featured in issue #885, Sakurai revealed his role as the director and game designer for the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii console. Released in 2008, Super Smash Bros. Brawl became a monumental achievement in Sakurai’s career, solidifying his lasting legacy within the annals of video game history.
