After a long, long time, Nintendo is bringing a 2D side-scrolling Mario game. The highly anticipated title, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, is going to be released on October 20, 2023, on the Nintendo Switch. However, pre-orders are still on. This game will not only bring back the classic vibe but also some new features like online multiplayer modes. But a few days before the release, Nintendo removed one of the major features of the game.

Nintendo removes Collision in co-op multiplayer from Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Recently, the company removed the collision feature from the co-op multiplayer of the game. Collison was a fun way to play the multiplayer mode. It allowed players to bump into each other, bounce off heads, throw each other, and compete for footing on the platform. However, this collision feature made things quite chaotic as well.

Previously, other Super Mario Bros. games on Wii and Wii U had this feature, but players have seen how chaotic those titles were. Although colliding and throwing might be fun for a moment, if players are bumped or thrown repeatedly, it could lead to frustration rather than enjoyment.

In this regard, Nintendo Director Shiro Mouri said, “When we took the leap of faith and removed collision, we realized that it removed a lot of the stress. For example, when you have a narrow platform that you can jump to, when somebody is there, they just get in the way.”

Other multiplayer features

The removal of collisions doesn’t mean all the fun ends with multiplayer modes. Players can still interact with other players while playing co-op with them. However, there is a catch. They will have to save the defeated friend from being a ghost before the timer ends. And if anyone is playing as Yoshi, they can easily ride on them by just jumping on them.

The co-op mode in Super Mario Bros. Wonder can be played with a maximum of four players. Players will have the option to choose from several popular characters in the series. These include Toadette, Toad, Yoshi, Peach, Luigi, and Daisy. As earlier mentioned, if the defeated player is not revived before the time runs out, it will eventually become a shadow. Though these shadows won’t be able to interact with players, they can share items, such as power-ups or greetings.

So, that was it. The collision mode is gone, and now we know why. However, the rest of the features are surely enough to keep players engrossed.
