There was a time when Nintendo and Sega were overtaking the other turn by turn. They were pretty hard competitors for each other and had no intention to let any chance go in vain where they can take the lead. We all remember those “Genesis does what Nintendo doesn’t” ads.

Eventually, Sega ceased all hardware production seeing that Dreamcast was not getting much traction in the market. But amidst that competition, Sega once developed a game for Nintendo’s GameCube. A game that was very successful.

Who would have thought that we would see a Sega-developed game on Nintendo’s console when both these hardware developers were at their peak?

F-Zero is one of the fastest racing series the video gaming community has ever seen. It inspired numerous other concepts, the biggest being Sony’s Wipeout series which eventually build a bigger name for itself. Moreover, Nintendo developed that game as a launch title for the SNES console.

Other than being a game set in a futuristic world where players drive vehicles without tires, inspired by hovercrafts, these games are basically driving games. As per the gameplay, the players are required to race a bunch of opponents and emerge as winners.

They also face a bunch of obstacles such as land mines and slip zones. These obstacles make driving much harder and build up a fair amount of challenge for the players. Plus, the tracks change as players jump from planet to planet completing different courses.

As we can all see, it is pretty much a futuristic driving game until Sega got its hands on it. Sega moved from first to third-party development in 2001 and developed a close relationship with Nintendo.

After developing multiple games for Nintendo, both companies announced that they would be collaborating on the development of a new F-Zero game for Nintendo’s GameCube console. The developer would be Sega’s Amusement Vision which is known as Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio nowadays.

Once the development was done, Sega and Nintendo launched F-Zero GX in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube. And the moment it stepped into the community, it became one of the most successful games in the series. It was so loved by critics that to this day journalists name it one of the best racing games ever made. Thereby, giving an example of the prowess of the two video gaming developers. And we hope we keep seeing such masterpieces from them in the coming years.
