The Super Mario Bros. movie showed fans and newcomers a lot about this franchise. To some, it was just a bunch of exciting scenes mangled together, but to people familiar with it, this movie was a journey full of exciting references and Easter Eggs.
From Mario Kart to Super Smash Bros., to Luigi’s Mansion, every game was referenced in this excellent movie, and besides that, fans even noticed a reference to Mario’s original name, Jump Man, in one of the scenes. This just goes to show that the people in charge of making this movie were taking their job a tad more seriously. And they were aware of this universe in detail.

Besides that, there are rumors that fans might even see movies based on The Legend of Zelda series too. Once all these characters get a proper introduction, a stand-alone Donkey Kong movie also needs to happen. And then Nintendo could keep sending all these characters invites to a weird tournament. And set up a Smash Bros. movie.
There are a number of directions this thing can go in. Smash Bros. can lead to the introduction of Samus, and then fans can finally have their Metroid movie. And once Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Link, and Samus are in the picture, a Mario Kart stand-alone movie can happen too.
