As reported by VGC, Shunturo Furukawa recently spoke during the Japanese investor Q&A. In the session, he was asked a question about his thoughts on the next big Nintendo hardware in the future.

While mentioning how the smooth launch of the Switch has helped them to release more games consistently in the last five years, he also discussed the factors regarding the new console.

He said that the ability of the company to keep releasing more software so far has been because they only had one platform to work on, which is the Nintendo Switch. Thus, the team didn’t have much of a problem delivering a large number of titles.

“However, the question of whether we will be able to just as smoothly transition from the Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware is a major concern for us. Based on our experiences with the Wii, Nintendo DS, and other hardware, it is very clear that one of the major obstacles is how to easily transition from one hardware to the next.”

Simply put, the matter of the next successor to the Switch is crucial for Nintendo. Because it doesn’t want a shaky launch for the device. Just like the Switch, it wants the new console to be welcoming for the next batch of games in the coming years.

And to achieve this, they are trying to focus on having long-term relationships with customers. Apart from releasing new games, they will also offer multiple services that will use Nintendo accounts and other IPs “outside of gaming software”.

Furukawa also mentioned that for the next hardware, they will provide backward compatibility. That way, Switch’s existing user base of 100 million-plus, will keep expanding further.
