Nintendo has had many gaming luminaries work for the company across its lifetime. And few other are as popular and widely loved by fans as Shigeru Miyamoto. Significantly, he shepherded colossal hits such as The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 64, Star Fox Zero, and more.
However, one of his biggest contributions to gaming has to be his famous quote “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad”.

This wise quote reflects Miyamoto’s wisdom and deep understanding of the video game industry. Or does it? YouTube channel SwitchForce may blow your mind with the revelation that this quote could have been misattributed all along.

The aforementioned quote is a mainstay of the video game industry. Chiefly, it pops up every time a game is delayed. And with the ballooning scale of modern AAA titles, delays have become all too common. However, before you quote Miyamoto next time, remember that he never said that! This revelation comes to fans because of the work of Javed Sterritt. He put out a challenge on Twitter, giving away $100 to anyone who could find the true origin of the famous Miyamoto quote. Accordingly, tons of eager fans went to work, but no one could do it. In fact, they soon uncovered the true origins of the quote.

Turns out the quote popped up in GameFan magazine in 1998. Jason Schreiber at GT Interactive had this to say about their game Unreal, “A good game is only late until it ships, a bad game is bad forever.”

Furthermore, the quote was in use as far back as 1997. With Gamepro magazine calling it “an industry catch phrase” regarding Blasto. So what’s the Nintendo connection? Well, in Edge magazine,1998, they talked about Ocarina of Time. They were present at a Nintendo development house where they saw a poster saying, “A good game is only late until it ships, a bad game is bad until the end of time.”

And so after years of being an industry mainstay, the mystery of the misattributed quote is solved. However, even if the legendary game director was not the originator, it holds true regardless. Did you learn something new?
