The developers at NetherRealm have recently shared a tease of the upcoming installment in the iconic fighting game franchise, Mortal Kombat. The short video tease gave cryptic revelations about the next entry in the long-running series. But if the signs are right, it may not be what the fans were expecting.
Previously, NetherRealm had shared another cryptic tease, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat. In that, the audience could see a steady flow of sand calmly dropping through an hourglass, and with a sudden change in the camera angle, the focus shifted to a single grain, which then exploded.

This teaser had been a little too cryptic for the community to build some solid theories and speculations about the game. However, the latest one may have given some interesting information about the next game, and the fans couldn’t be happier to finally receive some serious news about the highly anticipated MK game.
The clock is going in reverse in the Mortal Kombat universe
In the new teaser, we can see the camera slowly following the second hand of a clock while it is ticking towards 12. But as it was about to reach the 12th mark, something went wrong. It started to shake vigorously at 11, and then a weird reality-shattering break happened, and the hand skipped the mark and went 1.
Fans are sure that this is a confirmation of the reboot rumors. Instead of releasing the 12th game in the series, the developers may most probably reboot the series. Even lore-wise, it is a possibility. The sands and the themes of time could be a potential foreshadowing of Kronika’s time-and-space-altering hourglass.
This specific ancient artifact was heavily present in the previous game. The most popular theory is that Kronika’s hourglass has somehow gone awry, causing a space-time rift that will most probably reset the entire universe and the timeline. However, these are all fan-based theories and speculations, and we would suggest that readers take this information with a grain of salt.
