The initial broadcast of HBO’s The Last of Us has wrapped for now. The premiere of episode 9 was the final installment in season 1 of the show. Based on the gaming series by Naughty Dog studios, The Last of Us season 1 told the story of the first game, which was released back in 2013.
Seeing the massive success of the show, both critically and commercially, HBO greenlit an early season 2. From the reports and interviews of the cast as well as the showrunners, it was confirmed that the second season will directly adapt the story of The Last of Us: Part II, which will be heavily focusing on Ellie and it split between multiple seasons.

Initially, it was expected that the entire series will be wrapped after two seasons. However, the original creator of the game and also the co-producer of the television show has subtly hinted that there will be more than two seasons. “It’s more than one season […] we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct,” said Neil Druckmann.

However, season 2 could have some ‘radical’ changes in the story. The overall structure and progression may be the same, but some of the vital plot points as well as instances may get changed in the final cut of the television show.

Showrunners say Season 2 may be ‘radically’ different
“It will be different just as this season was different [from the first game],” said The Last of Us co-producer and writer Craig Mazin. “Sometimes it will be different radically, and sometimes it will be [barely] different at all. But it’s going to be different and it will be its own thing. It won’t be exactly like the game. It will be the show that Neil and I want to make. But we are making it with Bella.”

While the first season also had some drastic deviations, most of the time, the story remained the same. The fans were also very concerned about the deviation in the season, but in the end, they proved to be nothing enhancements for the overall experience. That is why there is some hope regarding the changes int he season 2.
