The Last of Us franchise has reached an unmatched level of popularity in 2023. Especially, after the incredible success of HBO’s live-action TV series. Fans are so attached to this IP now that they want it to keep going, no matter what.
While the second season of the TV show is already confirmed, hardcore gamers are still wondering about a potential TLOU III. Ever since 2020’s sequel released, TLOU enthusiasts have been eager to hear about a third installment. Sadly, there’s been no official update from Naughty Dog just yet. However, things may change going forward, thanks to a recent interview in which creator Neil Druckmann ended up revealing something mysterious.

The franchise creator is not one to give away crucial details in advance. He likes to tease the fans before making any official announcement. A similar incident took place recently when he interacted with media outlet Entertainment Weekly.
When asked about The Last of Us Part III, Neil simply said, “As far as the next game at Naughty Dog, I can’t say anything. My comms director over there will slaughter me.”

Was there a subtle hint of sorts? As of now, we know there’s another Naughty Dog project in the works. And that it might be none other than The Last of Us 3 itself. However, it’s just a theory. Wishful thinking even. Another possibility could be that a brand new IP might be on its way.

All things considered, the mystery over The Last of Us Part III is still unsolved. However, the rumors of HBO’s live-action TV drama getting four seasons in total may eventually result in a big announcements going forward. Unfortunately, gaming fans will have to wait unless an official update is dropped from the side of devs at Naughty Dog. In the meanwhile, one thing we know for certain is that more Last of Us content is on its way. A standalone multiplayer game, Factions is happening, which Druckmann confirmed at the Summer Games fest 2022.

If a third game is announced, it will be interesting to see if its related to the events of TLOU II. Or will it be a new chapter? Will Ellie be the protagonist? Or will it be someone new?
