It’s hard to imagine Imane “Pokimane” Anys without her playing video games. After all, it has become a part of her identity. She even appeared in Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy because of her identity as a video game streamer. But it wasn’t always the case, as she hid the gamer side during her school days.

 

Imane “Pokimane” Anys is one of the most prominent female streamers. She has been streaming since 2013 and now has a fan following of over 9.3 million on the platform. She rose to glory because of her video game streams, especially League of Legends and Fortnite.

Pokimane was a secret gamer as a kid

The Twitch streamer appeared in an interview with YouTuber Anthony Padilla. There she talked about many things related to her life as a streamer and also beyond that. One of the highlights of the interview was Pokimane talking about her childhood.

Poki revealed how she grew up in an academic-centric family and was an internet nerd who enjoyed playing MMORPG games like MapleStory and RuneScape. She also liked watching anime shows. But then the 26-year-old revealed that she “had a huge hobby of gaming, which was my after-school secret life.”

Padilla was shocked to know that Pokimane kept her gaming a secret as a child and questioned why she did that. So, Pokimanme answered, “People weren’t into gaming then. It was not cool.”

Then the Twitch streamer went on to talk about going to study programming, physics, and chemical engineering. She even had extra classes that led her to have a mental breakdown. Pokimane further claimed, “If you’re in engineering, and you haven’t had a mental breakdown, you’re not in engineering.”

Despite the breakdown and stress, Poki claimed to still love maths and science. However, she used to livestream during her college days but was left with the biggest dilemma, as she had to choose between academics or streaming before the third year. With much thought, she opted for the latter one, but then came the biggest challenge of making her parents understand it.

The 26-year-old streamer shared how she told her parents about becoming a full-time streamer. She revealed, “I had a PowerPoint. I convinced my parents. I’m like these are my projected incomes.” Thankfully, her parents were convinced after seeing the PowerPoint and the rest is history now.
