In the history of gaming, one of the most influential and renowned fighting games is none other than the hyper-gory, mature-themed 1v1 fighter title, Mortal Kombat. While there is a huge demand for the main line game, fans also crave one of the spin-off installments, which is considered one of “the best” titles in the franchise.

But not just the fans, even the long-time director and co-creator of the series itself, Ed Boon, also shares the sentiment for remastering the classic spin-off Mortal Kombat game. But on Twitter, the veteran shared that, no matter how much he or the community demands it, there may never be a remaster of that game.

Although the latest installments in the series such as the MK 11 are highly popular and beloved, fans have been very vocal about bringing back the classics, such as the MK 1, MK 2, and MK 3. Among them, the director and co-founder decided to choose a much lesser-known entry, called Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

This entry re-imagined the classic formula of the franchise and offered a completely new style, where instead of featuring a huge roster of fighters, the game focused on the two characters from the original games and had much more linear action-adventure type gameplay than a 1v1 fighter game.

In a recent interaction on Twitter, Boon responded to a fan’s post where they praised the classic MK spin-off game. They even deemed it “the greatest game ever made”. This post garnered a lot of traffic on social media and even managed to gain the attention of the big man himself.

Ed replied to the tweet saying, “Yea, Shaolin Monks was a lotta fun. Wish we could have made another or a remaster,” giving a subtle hint that it may never be a possibility for the game to see a modern remake or sequel. In the tweet, Boon also shared an interesting tidbit about the game. He said the original plan for the Shaolin Monks was to make a single-player game focused only on Raiden.

Currently, Boon and his team are working on the next installment in the series, MK 12. There hasn’t been a confirmed release date, but it is expected that the game may get released sometime in 2023.
