As the first season of the Last of Us ended, the cast and crew are set to fire up the production again for the next season. Witnessing the massive success of the initial season, HBO green-lit the adaptation for the next part of the story, which has been confirmed to be split into multiple seasons.

Learning from their experience by working together in the initial season, co-producer and writer of the show, Craig Mazin, shared that he and his fellow writer and producer, Neil Druckmann, will be more ‘efficient’ in the next project. Something that will allow the duo to enhance the story and dive deeper into the source material.

The Last of Us season 2 will be much more expansive

In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Craig Mazin said, “Our process of kicking the tires on everything, our process of agreeing that no matter how much we disagree, we will find a way to agree. There’s no veto power here. No one gets his way, it’s ‘we will figure it out,” talking about the dynamic that he shares with Neil Druckmann.

Working together for such a long time, Craig shares that their writing process has greatly improved. He hopes that for the next installments, their process will be much more efficient. “I think we will be a little more efficient in our process, which means we’ll have more time to do some more complicated things.” added Mazin.

The upcoming season of the HBO show will directly adapt the story from the Last of Us: Part II. In this part, the narrative shifts drastically. From a story of parenthood, it turns into a violent tale about the never-ending cycle of revenge. It mainly focuses on Ellie and a new character named Abby. Part II takes place years after the incidents from the first part.

Talking about how they are planning to tweak Bella Ramsey’s (Ellie) appearance for the upcoming season, Craig said, “We know what we’re going to do in terms of her costume and makeup and hair,” Mazin continued, “But more importantly, we know the spirit and soul of the actor. She’s 19 now, which is the same age as Ellie in The Last of Us Part II … it will be different.”
