“Mind Your Business Okay” – Pokimane Reveals Personal Reason for Using Different Name in Public

In the American online streaming industry, one of the most well-known and significant personalities is Pokimane. For the longest time, Poki had secured the crown of being the biggest female streamer in the world. And with such astronomical accolades, come problems. 

Pokimane’s fan following spans all over the world. Millions of people follow her every step on social media. That’s why it’s not surprising that even in real life, Imane has to be very careful, or she could initiate a potential stampede of fans everywhere she goes. Recently on TikTok, she shared some of her failsafe.

Why does Pokimane never use her real name in public?

In the TikTok, Imane shared that using her real name in public establishments such as Starbucks and similar places can compromise her security. Other than that, another reason why she had to go with a “white name” every time she orders a coffee is that the employees in these establishments have a hard time pronouncing her name.  

“If you see me out in public at like a Starbucks or I’m getting food and I give them a completely random name and you know that’s not my real name — mind your business okay,” said Pokimane. With this, she requested her fans and followers to remain discreet, even if they recognize her in public places.

“It’s my white name. Sometimes I go by Jen or Kim, you know. Because if I give them my actual name, Imane, here’s how the conversation goes. ‘Yvonne? No no no Imane. Elon? Girl, do I look like Elon Musk to you?’” added Poki, saying how hard and frustrating it is for her to have a non-western name. 

“They’ll ask how to spell [Imane], and they’ll come out and ask ‘Is there an Imani here? I moon? Imana?’ I don’t wanna deal with it,” she further stated. According to her, every time she orders in a public place, the workers mess up her name or explicitly ask for the spelling before taking the order, which is an added inconvenience for her. 

Poki may have spent most of her life in America, but she was born in Morocco and spent her early childhood years in Canada. Her real name, Imane, comes from the Urdu language, and it means “Faith”. It is quite a common name in Muslim countries.
