A recent leak from Microsoft provides insight into their ambitious plans for the gaming division, a $16 billion powerhouse. Microsoft aims not only to dominate the gaming console market but also to revolutionize Xbox Game Pass into the undisputed leader of the gaming subscription realm.
Journey towards the $8 billion milestone

Microsoft envisions a promising future for Xbox, with an estimated worth of $36 billion by 2030. This surge in value will be driven primarily by game sales, microtransactions, and purchases across consoles, PCs, and cloud gaming. In fact, Microsoft anticipates revenue of $16.9 billion solely from transactions by 2030. This amount significantly surpasses Xbox’s current earnings. Now, Microsoft is positioning itself to dominate the gaming subscription market, projecting $8 billion in revenues by 2030 from the Game Pass.

Subscriptions form a significant part of the growth strategy, and Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard is set to play a pivotal role in reaching this target. Microsoft also aims to double its subscription service revenues within a six-year period. Currently, Microsoft reports $3.9 billion in earnings from subscriptions, encompassing both Game Pass and Xbox LIVE.
Blockbuster titles like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo are expected to contribute substantially to Xbox Game Pass’s value proposition. Integration of titles offers a seamless gaming experience across devices and a surge in advertising revenue.
The Universal Store vision and wider advertising
Microsoft’s vision transcends conventional boundaries. Following the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft intends to introduce advertisements into mobile and PC games. While most of these ads will likely target mobile and free-to-play PC games, Microsoft’s robust ad infrastructure, combined with King’s ad platform and Xandr ad tech, could help to make Microsoft Universal Store something truly unique.

Their Universal Store concept seeks to create a seamless gaming experience to reshape the industry. In addition, Microsoft also plans to boost advertising revenue. Microsoft’s advertising revenue, which stood at approximately $100 million in FY22, is forecasted to surge to $1.4 billion by 2030, marking a notable increase within just six years.
