Two of the biggest games of 2023 launched on October 20th. Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder are exclusives that are setting some kind of milestone for their respective platforms. One is the first ever game on the PlayStation 5 to reportedly take full advantage of its power. Another is the 2D Mario game that its fans have been waiting for for years now.

Hence, it comes as no surprise that both Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder became critical hits at launch. It’s also not a big surprise that these games are now topping the UK sales charts. Spider-Man 2 is a massive Triple-A title with the kind of gameplay and visuals only a game on the PlayStation 5 can have. A massive city, a fast way of transversal, and a bunch of actors playing a bunch of villains are all primed to have a showdown against not one but two Spider-Men.

On the other hand, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a very Nintendo game, is something only Nintendo can design. A funky-looking 2D Super Mario title full of crazy moments and puzzle-filled levels,, it’s no surprise that, at the end of the day, both of these games are now topping the UK sales charts. After all, they are giving their respective fanbase exactly what they asked for.

Spider-Man 2 is no doubt in the first position; it is followed by Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which sits at number two. The third spot is taken by EA FC24; the fourth is Sonic Superstars; and the fifth is Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the latest game in Ubisoft’s sci-fi stealth action games.

All these are just boxed sales, which means these are the games that gamers purchased discs for. The real sales number would be seen later when the analysts get a better understanding of all-over sales of these titles. Nevertheless, they are already smash hits.

The latest Super Mario game might be a success, but it could not match Odyssey.

While it is great that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is successful enough now to hit UK sales charts, according to Gamesindustry.biz’s Christopher Dring, the 2D Mario adventure is significantly behind its 3D predecessor, Super Mario Odyssey.

It does not come as a surprise either; while many fans adore the 2D Mario titles, there is a much larger fanbase willing to spend money on a 3D game that looks better in many ways. 2D Mario games serve a niche, as not everyone cares for 2D platformers, even if it’s Mario.
