Mario Composer Koji Kondo Asserts on the Idea That ‘Mario Is Not Cute but Cool!’

Koji Kondo is a popular name among Nintendo fans. This composer, pianist, sound director and music director of Nintendo is famous for making memorable music for many popular games. His list showed games like The Legends of Zelda series, which received much critical appreciation from fans for its background score. 

Recently this popular composer again caught the spotlight. Almost everyone in the industry knows about Kondo’s marvelous work in the Mario franchise. His contribution to Super Mario is incredible following his creative input in the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme. This talented sound producer made an interesting comment about Mario that blew fans’ minds away.

People’s favorite Mario is famous as the official mascot of popular game-developing giant Nintendo. This video game character was created by Shigeru Miyamoto with Charles Martinet being its voice. Mario’s history involved its debut game arcade one, which was released in 1981. Following the immense popularity of the character, Mario completed its 40th anniversary in the industry this year.

Undoubtedly, Koji Kondo’s effort on making memorable sounds that matched Mario’s vibe completely was always visible to fans. Recently one Mario fan posted a statement where Kondo spoke some bits about the behind-the-scenes of creating Mario. He spoke about how Mario appeared cooler than a cute character to him- “When junior staff join and are are asked to make music, at first everyone’s image is ‘Mario is cute’… Every time I tell them that is not the case. I say ‘Mario is not cute’, ‘Mario is cool’, ‘please make cool music'”

Kondo’s comment on Mario left the internet divided

This Mario fan was spotted posting the video of Kondo’s interview on Twitter which sparked many contradictory views among the community.

On one hand, people praised Kondo for his efforts on the Mario project- “Still hard to wrap my head around the fact that before age 25, Kondo wrote the themes for both the Mario & Zelda franchises. Most composers don’t achieve such notoriety for a single game in their careers, & here this guy wrote 2 of the most recognizable songs ever created.”

One Mario fan spotted discarding that Mario isn’t cute- “I dunno Mr. Kondo… If you do a triple jump Mario says “yippeeee!” That’s pretty cute.”

Some Mario fans vehemently considered that Kondo’s statement is wrong.
