The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an absolute hit! With immense love received from the audience, it has actually superseded the expectations of its creators at the box office. Based on Shigeru Miyamoto’s popular Italian-American plumber Mario, The Super Mario Bros. Movie scored $1.359 billion, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2023. 

However, a recently released film is giving a 10 on 10 competition to this animated movie directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath. However, it looks like The Super Mario Bros. movie is getting tough competition from another release of the year. Not only a competition but Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has actually snatched the crown of the highest-grossing film from our Mario movie.

Although Barbie is not based on animation like The Super Mario Bros. movie, it represents one of the iconic childhood favorites, the Barbie doll. After Barbie’s release in July, fans absolutely loved the idea of how Mattel’s popular doll comes forward to speak about patriarchal social issues, raises support for women’s empowerment, and, most importantly, brings a smile to every girl/woman irrespective of flaws.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought us to our nostalgic childhood when Italian-American plumber Mario and his brother Luigi joined the adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom. They fought against the evil Koopa and King Bowser. Although the movie presented Mario’s sentiment pretty well, but seemed like Barbie’s appearance at the box office felt more sound to the fans.

People were spotted expressing their sadness and disappointment over Barbie snatching away the ruling position of fan-favorite Mario movie.

Some of the fans also believed that Margot Robbie took over Chris Patt with her immensely brilliant acting in the movie Barbie- “Margot cleared Chris Pratt”. Some people also believe that it was Ryan Gosling’s brilliant acting that helped Barbie win over the Super Mario Bros. movie.

However, some of the fans were also speaking about how Barbie was itself a great movie for which it received so much love and appreciation from fans.

Despite fans being upset about the news, Super Mario ruled the box office for over 4 months until Barbie was released. Now, both the movies have different approaches to life and society, it is kind of unfair to compare them with each other. Therefore, we can acknowledge that both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Barbie made the 2023 extra amazing with such beautiful storytelling on the big screen.
