The Legend of Zelda series is pretty famous for utilizing its maps. Big or small, the story in these games takes players in every direction. Usually, older games had a dungeon in every corner of their maps. Link had to explore them in order to get the stuff he needed to save Hyrule from the wrath of Ganon or whatever threat he faced.

This changed as maps grew larger, and these dungeons changed into divine beasts in Breath of the Wild. Divine beasts were basically mammoth mechanical creatures that were under Ganon’s control. Link had to enter them, solve some puzzles and defeat a form of Ganon to free them.

The game was a success, but fans found these dungeons unsatisfying. With the announcement of this sequel, they had hopes that Nintendo might have improved upon those. Seems like they have. In a recent Nintendo-published Q&A the game’s director Hidemaro Fujibayashi explained that this game has massive dungeons.

He said, “There is a dungeon that connects directly from Hyrule’s surface. If you dive from the sky straight into the dungeon, you’ll trigger an event. We think this will be a new experience that wasn’t possible in the previous game.”

Game’s lead artist, Satoru Takizawa added, “Making a “wide variety” was pretty challenging. The four Divine Beasts were the dungeons in the last game, and they shared similar designs. This time, the dungeons are huge and each carry their own regional look and feel, just like traditional The Legend of Zelda games.”

Looks like Nintendo was taking the feedback seriously and fans would finally get what they had wanted. It also looks like these new dungeons would pretty much feature their own distinctive biomes.
