Fans have already branded Daedalic’s Lord of the Rings: Gollum as the worst game of the year. The title was released after multiple delays and the end result failed to attract the fans. Amidst all this criticism of the Gollum game, the developers are still pursuing another game.
But looks like their efforts of developing another title have come to a halt. The developers have halted all development projects, presumably due to the poor reception of Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

In a statement to gameswirtschaft.de, the German game studio Daedalic Entertainment declared to have halted all development projects, including a new title in the works. The studio will now focus all its resources on publishing, licensing, sales, and marketing. They have called this decision a “new beginning in the long history of Daedalic Entertainment” while also calling it a “difficult turning point”.
The statement also revealed that at least 25 employees will be let go due to this decision. Although they have added that they will support the employees to their best extent in finding new opportunities within their network. This decision to end all development processes might seem abrupt at first, but it was a long time coming.
The multiple delays in the Lord of the Rings: Gollum and the poor reception of the game acted as a strong catalyst that started the wheels of motion on this decision. Currently, the 2022 title is the lowest-ranking game by ratings on Metacritic. Furthermore, multiple critics and fans have called this game the worst adaptation of the Tolkien universe. Multiple fans were calling the graphic quality subpar and at the level of a PS2 game.

Although the developers have apologized for delivering a below-average game, they were looking to change the fans’ opinion with their new title. However, this halt in internal development has removed that chance too. But this change in focus might actually reap better rewards for Daedalic Entertainment in the long term.
