The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom recently launched for the Nintendo Switch to an insanely positive reception. The game is seen as one of the most influential games of at least 2023 if not all time. It brought its fans some never before seen abilities in a game.

Abilities like Ultrahand are something that comes into existence very rarely. This kind of ability requires a bunch of optimizations just to make sure that when fans go crazy with it, the game stays stable. One must wonder, “How do developers decide on such abilities?” Produce’s Eiji Aonuma might have that answer.

Recently, during a Q&A video, game producer Eiji Aonuma was asked how they came up with these new abilities like Ultrahand and Ascend for Link.

In Tears of the Kingdom, players can pick just about anything they feel like and attach it to anything else they want, effectively creating a weird weapon. This ability also allows players to build some really elaborate machinery. This can be done using a bunch of equipment found throughout Hyrule.

Then comes Ascend, an ability that has proven to be a godsend for many. Fans of the original game, Breath of the Wild, might remember their mortal enemy, the rain. When players used to climb some surfaces while it rained, they basically slipped.

This was less a mechanic and more an annoyance; an untimely rainfall can hinder one’s progress. Eiji Aonuma, too, had some really weird issues with this game. He claims that whenever he entered a cave, he found it tedious to walk back to its entrance after the cave had been explored. So, they found this ability that puts players in a position where they can exit an area the second they want to.

For many, though, this ability will come in handy when they decide to climb some high peaks while it rains. It’s pretty typical too, developers find unusual answers to very unusual problems, but those solutions work in many other ways too. This ability is an example of that.

Here’s hoping that the DLC that follows this game is as good as the base game.
