Recently, Sony confirmed that they will carry on producing the popular PlayStation 4 for the year 2022. The popular 2013 release PS 4 is already one of the best-selling consoles out there. Speaking of PlayStation 4, as of Dec 2021, this popular console has sold over a whopping 116 million units, which is just amazing.

No doubt this console has achieved many milestones in terms of sales and popularity. Certainly, people are still buying this console, which reflects its ever-rising popularity.

What’s a little surprising is it’s been over 7 years, and this console still sells like a charm. Therefore, some fans might be a little confused about Sony continuing the production of PS 4 while the next-gen PS 5 is already in the market.

So, Sony will continue the production of PS 4 as the next-gen PS 5 continues to suffer a global supply shortage. The entire community and all the fans across the world are fully aware of how difficult owning a PS 5 has been over the past two years. And it’s all because this latest next-gen console is facing stock availability issues.

The entire production of this console is hampered by global chips and semi-conductor shortages because of the pandemic. In fact, the pandemic and the global lockdown have also disrupted worldwide trade. All these factors have led to difficulty in owning a PS 5.

Sony’s plans for PlayStation 4 production for this year

Many fans might be unfamiliar with the fact. But earlier Sony had plans to stop the PS 4 production by the end of the year 2021. This made sense, as this popular console has been on the market for over 7 years. What’s even more surprising is Sony also told all their assembly partners about discontinuing the PS 4 production.

But now Sony has changed their mind. As recently, according to vgchartz, one of Sony’s spokesperson said,

“It is one of the best-selling consoles ever and there is always crossover between generations,”

Later on, the spokesperson also confirmed that there aren’t any plans regarding the discontinuation of PS 4 production. Moreover, Sony’s strategy for the year 2022 is to produce around a million PS 4 units to keep up with PS 5 global stock shortages.
