In a recent patent published by Sony, the gaming company shared its plan to revamp the local co-op scene. The PlayStation creators are looking to scale up the number of players concurrently playing a local co-op game. Traditionally, the scale of co-op gaming is limited to players in single-digit numbers.

With this patent, however, Sony is aiming to connect dozens of players simultaneously. For this, they have proposed a giant screen like the ones used in a theater. Furthermore, the patent plans to provide each person present with a controller to control one single character on screen.

Sony is not limiting the use case of this patent too. In the patent, they further suggested, “There is also an opportunity to build local multiplayer games in AR, which also introduces novel challenges of rendering many slightly-different points of view of the same game.”

While Sony is attempting the noble task of reviving local co-op, the level at which they are planning to carry it out is challenging. Implementing a co-op title for dozens of people might lead to confusion for players due to too much happening on screen.

Furthermore, this model of multiple players playing concurrently will only work for 2D titles or 2.5D titles set in a tabletop environment. But knowing the acumen of Sony, it is highly plausible they will overcome this challenge with ease.
