PlayStation fans are awaiting the launch of Spider-Man 2 since its reveal trailer. This PlayStation 5 exclusive title is turning up to be a treat for the fans of this console. Furthermore, even Sony is looking at this game to boost the sales of their consoles. They launched a limited edition PS5 bundle for the game to achieve just that.
However, a recent leak pointed out that this title was ready for a cross-platform launch. PlayStation would have had to share some of the game’s success with Xbox and PC if that would have been true.

In a leak from Michael Pachter on his Patreon page, he revealed Spider-Man 2 started development as a multiplatform game coming to Xbox and PC. He talked to Marvel executives and found out Sony paid for an exclusive franchise deal. This is one of the reasons behind PlayStation’s immense success, after all, it was propelled to success thanks to the help of the 2018 Spider-Man title.

Developers of the game Insomniac Games were apparently initially making the sequel a cross-platform release. According to Pachter the exclusive deal between Sony and Marvel was “closed after work on the game had started”. Then, Sony acquired Insomniac Games to gain control over the future sequels of the title.
Xbox’s costly mistake
Xbox also played a huge role in making the title PlayStation exclusive. Back in 2022, Jay Ong of Marvel Games revealed that they had offered the 2018 Spider-Man title to both Xbox and PlayStation. Xbox, at that time, declined their offer whereas Sony showed an open-minded outlook towards this deal. Sony proactively agreed to make the 2018 title exclusive to their platform, and the rest is history.
