Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield are two of the most exciting titles of this year. The first one has sent a buzz of excitement among the fans since its release on August 3rd. Whereas the latter is yet to be released, but there is no shortage of excitement for this title as well.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has already earned a place in the top spot for the best game of 2023 on Metacritic. On the other hand, with the amount of hype Starfield is getting, we don’t think we have ever seen anything like that. So, both games have strong potential to lift the crown in 2023. But there is one particular aspect in which Baldur’s Gate 3 falls behind Starfield.

Language support is a basic need for all the games. Games reach a wider audience when it supports more languages. Without proper language support, it becomes difficult, sometimes even impossible, to play a game.

When players get immersed in a game, the in-game characters gradually become daily companions. But if the player only knows Spanish, and the game supports only English or does not support Spanish, that becomes a problem for the player.

Similarly, in this one key area, Starfield might gain an advantage over Baldur’s Gate 3. As of now, BG3 only supports English as an audio language. Whereas Starfield will support English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese as audio languages. This is a huge difference in terms of comprehension and proper game feel.

Although both games have a wide array of language support when it comes to the interface and subtitles, the variety of options might compensate for the lack of availability of other audio languages except English in BG3, but only to a certain extent. Because of the realism the in-game audio delivers, a simple interface and subtitles can never match it. Besides, for a player to understand what characters say, having to read subtitles while playing won’t be so enjoyable.

Importance of Audio Languages in Games

Interface and subtitles are kind of mechanical and artificial aspects of the game. We use our conscious brain to comprehend these. But audio languages give a more realistic feel, for which you need the subconscious part of your brain (mostly). This major aspect of the game makes the game way more realistic and tends to diminish the line between real life and the gaming world. And if the in-game voice audio is in your language, then there’s nothing better, provided it suits the game.
