Recent reports suggest that the popular Amazon show ‘The Boys’ star Karl Urban may appear in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie sequel as the iconic character Johnny Cage. Being from a martial arts background and known for his rough and sassy attitude, many have deemed that he will be the perfect choice for the cast.

Other than his iconic role in The Boys, fans also know Urban for his role as Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy in the Star Trek reboot. Fans and media alike have bestowed high praise on Karl Urban for his portrayal of the titular anti-hero in Judge Dredd. He has also been a part of Marvel’s cast, as he appeared in Thor: Ragnarok as Skurge, aka the Executioner.

In the fighting game genre, one of the most influential and popular titles is the Mortal Kombat series. Alongside Street Fighter and Tekken, Mortal Kombat, is one of the classics that shaped the genre. However, compared to SF and Tekken, Mortal Kombat is way more violent and adult-oriented.

Cashing in on the franchise’s popularity and following, there have been many adaptations that have tried to emulate the game in various mediums. The most recent of the bunch is the 2021 silver screen adaptation, directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh. 

Although the movie wasn’t quite a box office hit, Warner Bros. Pictures has green-lit a sequel to the adaptation. A recent report by The Wrap has revealed that Karl Urban may appear in the sequel as the Golden Boy or Johnny Cage. In the game’s lore, Johnny is a martial arts expert and A-List Hollywood actor.

His character was based on Hollywood legend Jean-Claude Van Damme. In the 1995 adaptation, Linden Ashby played Cage. As reported by The Wrap, in the modern iteration, Karl Urban may play the iconic character, as he is currently in the final ‘talks’ about the role and dates.

Mortal Kombat 2 is produced by Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Broken Road Production’s Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh.
