Not everyone thinks Spider-Man has a great origin story. While most fans consider the web-slinger’s inception a plausible one, some find it “dumb”. David Fincher is one of the most notable Hollywood directors. His long list of filmography some iconic movies like Fight Club, Seven, and Gone Girl. However, the director believes that Peter Parker’s transition into Spider-Man just doesn’t add up in his mind and revealed he wanted to make a movie that focused more on Parker’s adult life.

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finally here, the world is once again taken over by the Spidey fever. The latest Insomniac Games title has some exciting features including fast-travel that are making the action RPG feel more immersive. While the fans are hailing the game as a grand experience, Fincher believes his take on Spider-Man would have been a more believable one.

David Fincher wanted to get rid of “dumb” origin story

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Fincher talked about his inspiration and motivations that keep him wanting to make movies. During the interview, the filmmaker talked about how comic books shaped his early childhood during the 70s. He claimed he didn’t get dragged into the comics revival trope that gained traction during the 80s and hence retained the original charm of the industry in his heart.

Fincher also mentioned that he didn’t view Spider-Man’s origin story as something that he understood. Being bitten by a radioactive spider just didn’t resonate with him. However, he did claim that like many others, he was also a fan of the superhero and his fight against crime. This also led him to pitch an idea for a Spider-Man movie in 1999 that focused more on Peter Parker “as a grownup“.

However, Fincher revealed that the producers weren’t interested in a story that “eviscerated” Spider-Man’s origin story. He said that becoming Spider-Man after being bitten by a red and blue spider didn’t sit well with him and he wanted to make his spin-off based on the Marvel character. However, his ideas were trashed and the director let go of the project for good.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 looking to bring more heroes to its universe

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is being showered with positive reviews from the community. The gameplay is slick and New York City looks incredible. While some fans complain that the game feels broken, most of the reviews are generous. The PS5 exclusive also makes several nods towards other superheroes from Marvel comics and it was recently revealed that the upcoming Wolverine game will also take place in the same universe as the latest Insomniac Games title.

With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 teasing the arrival of Doctor Strange, The Fantastic Four, and the Spider-Verse, fans are excited to see what the franchise has to offer in the future.
