Back in 1985, a 2D platformer named, Super Mario Bros. was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the rest is history. The game became an icon all around the world. Every gamer was busy jumping over obstacles and fighting Bowser to save the majestic Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Even after all these years and all the changes and countless installments and spinoffs later, the world of Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom remains the same. Reflecting on the IPs achievement of being the favorite of countless people for such a long time, the creator of the original game Shigeru Miyamoto shared some thoughts.
“I think one aspect is that we’ve been close to 40 years developing Mario, and players who have been playing Mario, some of them are 40 years older, and I think that’s one aspect to consider.” said Miyamoto in a recent interview with Gameinformer. According to him, they not only keep in mind the new generation of players but also veteran fans while developing Mario.

Another aspect Shigeru thinks that keeps SMB relevant for such a long time is the Gameplay. “It’s very intuitive in that when you see a hole in the ground, you know to jump over it. When there’s a high place, you want to climb it… it’s almost like an illusion that they’re actually doing the actions themselves,” stated Shigeru, claiming the simple yet intuitive gameplay is what made Mario iconic
What does Shigeru think about the movie?

In terms of the Movie adaptation, Miyamoto says, “What we focused on is really trying to create the illusion that Mario might be someone that might actually exist in the real world.” Unlike the over-the-top wackiness of the video game character, Shigeru shared that the movie re-imagines Mario as a real person in the real world.
