The world of The Last of Us is a cruel one. Here, hope and trust are bleaker than food and shelter. Every moment is a fight for survival. One small mistake and a punishment worse than death will be waiting on the corner. In this husk of a world, one thing that is constant other than fear is violence.

It is not an option; it is a necessity. You can’t provide for your family, guide your loved ones or protect your child if you don’t use violence as a tool. The latest episode of the Last of Us, Episode 7 ‘Left Behind’, ponders upon the fact that we as human beings are inherently fragile and violence always has a toll on our vulnerable selves, both physically and mentally.

“It is a constant reminder that we are frail” said co-producer Craig Mazin. From the beginning of episode 7, the concept of stitches comes over and over. Both Ellie and Joel bear scars of their past. However, the only way to prevent a scar from opening up is to stitch it up. Close the gaping void that constantly pains the soul.

“Violence is permanent and leaves marks” said Neil Druckmann. Although violence is a tool to survive in this world, it doesn’t mean it has no price. Ever since episode 3 of the show, the audience, through the eyes of Ellie got to know about an incident about Joel’s past that literally left a scar on his body.

And in episodes 6 and 7, Joel has paid the biggest price for violence in his life. In his toughest moment, there is only one person that he can look up to, his newfound daughter, his greatest fear, the last hope of humility as well as his, Ellie.
