The situation regarding Call of Duty has become quite interesting since the beginning of this year. Especially after the launch of Modern Warfare II back in October 2022. The ongoing installment in the long-running series has ended up having a rollercoaster ride.

While it is breaking sales records, most of the players have been highly disappointed with its content. But then, the second season seems to have made them pleased with an improved experience. However, the franchise seems to be expanding more going forward. A newly leaked intel has suggested that fans are set to receive a full-fledged entry from Activision this year.

A trusted insider recently broke the internet with a revelation of crucial details related to this year’s full premium title. Considering that Treyarch’s next title is the Black Ops game, which is coming next year, speculations have escalated over 2023’s offering. Modern Warfare II was initially expected to have a life cycle of two active years. But now, it’s been reported that an entirely new game is reportedly coming in a few months. The news comes just weeks after another leak had mentioned huge information regarding this year’s premium release.

This year’s Call of Duty is more Modern Warfare

Jason Schreier, who’s a reputed journalist and industry insider, came up with a recent report regarding what’s exactly going on with the COD series when it comes to the roadmap for 2023. In an article, he revealed that this year’s new game “will be a continuation of 2022’s Modern Warfare II, a surprising twist in the lucrative video game franchise that for decades has released a completely new game every fall.”

Continuing further, he mentioned that publisher Activision’s plan is to make Call of Duty 2023 feel like a standalone installment. That’s what sources told him, who are familiar with the project. The upcoming extension of the ongoing Modern Warfare II title will carry forward maps and modes from the existing offering. However, Schreier also revealed that the current plans may end up changing before the launch itself later this year.

As for the title, the game won’t be called Modern Warfare III despite being a continuation of MWII. Furthermore, Sledgehammer Games is mainly involved in the making of this upcoming premium. The studio is responsible for 2021’s Vanguard, which wasn’t received nicely by a lot of fans.

However, Jason mentioned in his article that this time, developers are “more optimistic because they are receiving more support from other Activision studios, including Treyarch and Infinity Ward, whose leadership is also supervising the new game.”
