2023 saw the return of PlayStation to the world of handheld gaming. What was initially revealed at the PlayStation Showcase earlier this year as Project Q finally materialized as the PlayStation Portal. It is the first handheld device Sony has released since the infamous PlayStation Vita came out over a decade ago. However, once fans realized the Portal was not a standalone handheld console but simply an extension of the PlayStation 5, some were ready to abandon ship.

With the PlayStation Portal finally out for everyone to buy and sales at a high, is the PlayStation Portal actually good?

What strikes out about the device is the way it functions. The earlier reveal had fans expecting a machine similar to the ASUS ROG Ally or the SteamDeck. The prospect of a remote-play device was not what fans had in mind. However, once the device hit the market and people actually got the hands-on experience, the tables certainly turned. Fans suddenly realized the practicality of having a PlayStation Portal. While it does not run similarly to the Nintendo Switch or the SteamDeck, they could enjoy all of their PS5 games at their own convenience.

Enjoying a game of Call of Duty is no longer something for which one has to take time out of the day. As this Reddit user recently shared, simply using the Portal while in bed is a feasible option now. That too with all the features fans of the DualSense controller. As long as you have an internet connection, playing the game is not a problem.

While it does not change the landscape for fans of handheld consoles, it certainly makes for a good addition to the PlayStation ecosystem. Fans might even be in for a surprise if PlayStation brings its cloud gaming services to the device!
