After delivering two hit games this year, Capcom is back on the scene with a completely new dino-killer PvPvE game, Exoprimal.  The game is a mishmash of modern shooters with a convoluted premise. With mixed reviews all around, many gamers are wondering if the game is really worth their time and money. Well here’s everything you need to know to make up your mind.

Set in 2040, Exoprimal equips the player with an exosuit that grants them specific abilities. Players form teams of five players and fight to take down hoards of dinosaurs and “neosaurs” to complete objectives before facing off against an opponent team. Though some players think this game bears a likeness to Overwatch, there’s a lot that could deter your decision to buy this game. Here are three facts about Exoprimal you should know before buying it.

Game modes within Capcom’s latest: Exoprimal

There is only one game mode in Exoprimal, called the “Dino Survival” game mode. It teams you up with four other players in a race to beat objectives before five other players. This first match involves objectives like Dinosaur Cull, where you have to kill a certain number of dinosaurs of a specific kind, and VTOL defense, which involves protecting an aircraft from damage. The team that beats the objectives first gets a head start in the second match, which is where the teams actually face off.

Beating the objectives in the first match also grants the player experience points, unlocking upgrades and additional objectives. But you won’t see the other team on the same map in the first match. Your opponents only appear in the second match, which only ever plays out in one of two ways: an escort mission or a more challenging version of one of the objectives you beat in the first match. Capcom will add more objectives to the game over time, but the main game mode is currently quite limited.

Customization of characters

Exoprimal offers you a choice of three classes at the beginning of every match. The classes are tank, support, and assault, which aren’t out of pocket for a multiplayer shooter in 2023. There are a few different exosuits to choose from, each with unique mechanics. Though you can change the rig, which is your secondary fire weapon, and equip modules that give you generous performance boosts, you cannot change an exosuit’s abilities.

Most modules in the game are full-on upgrades that can double the effectiveness of some of your exosuit’s abilities. All ten suits in the game are unique in their mechanics and fun to play, which is what you’d expect from a Capcom game. Some characters outclass the others right from the beginning of the game. But there’s a silver lining — you can switch exosuits mid-match without respawning.

Dinosaur control abilities

In the second match, a single-use “Dominator” effect spawns randomly, and whoever grabs it gets to control a dino. A dino rampage is one of the easiest ways to kill opponents in the game, aside from the ultimate attacks available to the players. What’s more, there are three humongous dinos to pick from when you grab this special item.

The limited assortment of available maps and content overall makes Exoprimal feel more like a polished free-to-play game. The game premise is wacky, the game is fun to play but can get repetitive over time. Capcom has a long way to go with finishing this title before it becomes more popular, and there have been talks about the game getting new features and updates soon.
