Sony launched PlayStation Vita back in 2012. It is still seen as one of the best pieces of hardware Sony has ever released. Its OLED display, dual analog sticks, a touchpad on the back, and a 3G sim slot for connectivity on the go made it a device with all bells and whistles.

That console failed due to a number of bad business decisions and now there’s news we might see yet another portable gaming hardware from Sony!

Should Sony release another PlayStation Portable?

Back when the PlayStation Vita launched, Sony advertised it as a console that was as powerful as a home console. Games like Uncharted Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary proved that well enough. But there was some issue with that device, which were; its lack of internal storage and forced proprietary memory cards.

Every game on that device needed some storage space to store save games, and the device itself lacked any internal storage. This was a problem because Sony’s memory cards were priced too high and eventually Sony decided to give up on it.

And at the same time, a console that everyone looked down on, the Nintendo 3DS was successful. It was underpowered but full of games and allowed normal SD cards to be used for storage.

Then Nintendo released Nintendo Switch in 2017 and proved that they are the ultimate kings of portable gaming. The console is in every way a home console on the go. Nintendo even managed to convince a bunch of third-party developers to release games on their console.

Nintendo Switch sold more units in its still ongoing lifetime than Sony’s PlayStation 4 did before it was replaced by PlayStation 5 and portability plays a big part in it.

So is it the right time for Sony to release yet another portable? Well, if done right, portable gaming never gets old and is never out of fashion. Who would hate playing God of War on the go?

But we must not forget that Sony has a big competition in this department now. There’s the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, then there’s Valve’s popular Steam Deck, and several other brands are making similar consoles too.
