In a recent interview, the CEO of Xbox, Phil Spencer, was asked if we could see the FF7 remake and the PS5 exclusive FF16 on Xbox or not. In that regard, Spencer stated, “I can’t talk about the specifics of Square Enix at this point.” He has stated that it was quite fascinating that they were able to announce a few things at the showcase, including the highly anticipated RPG, Octopath Traveler II, which will be released on Xbox in early 2024. This game is also from Square Enix.

So, it’s visible that the distance between Square Enix and Xbox is reducing day by day. He has also stated how important it was for him to take the stage in Las Vegas at the Showcase with Japanese video game producer YoshiP and CEO of Square Enix, Takashi Kiryu. He thinks this meeting will start a new journey for Xbox and Square Enix together.

That means there are high chance that we will see the highly popular FF titles from Square Enix surface on Xbox. Also, FF7 Rebirth is around the corner. Set to be released on February 5, 2024, this title will serve as a sequel to FF7 Remake. But the sad part is that this game will also be a PS5 exclusive. But seeing the building relationship between Xbox and Square Enix, we won’t be surprised if this title comes up on Xbox too.

Xbox’s intention of pushing forward partnerships in Japan

This interview was not the only example of Xbox’s intention to expand its reign in Japan. Xbox may have started to catch up to PlayStation in terms of exclusivity, and after the PS Plus price hike, many fans are shifting towards Xbox Game Pass. But in one way, Xbox has always fallen behind PlayStation. And that is the availability of JRPGs on the platforms. PlayStation has always been home to popular JRGs like Final Fantasy. But things might be changing now.

Recently, Mircosoft has hired a new Director of Partnership for Xbox in Japan, Mena Sato Kato. Interestingly, she has previously served as the Vice President for two sectors—mobile business and business development—for Sony Interactive Entertainment for 8 years. This will surely strengthen Microsoft’s anchor in Japan.

Microsoft has also made significant investments in many big Japanese studios. Xbox has brought the last three Persona titles as well as the whole Yakuza series to the Game Pass.
