Reveal trailers at gaming showcase events play a significant role in creating the first impression of a game. Gamescom 2023 featured new footage from some massive upcoming games, such as Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Tekken 8. However, it didn’t end there. The audience was treated to the gameplay trailer of an upcoming action RPG, which appears to be inspired by the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Skyrim and Ghost of Tsushima.

Gamescom 2023 saw the arrival of Crimson Desert, a third-person action RPG. Initially announced in 2020, fans finally got more details through a gameplay trailer. And it looks like it could be a Game of the Year contender.

When it comes to RPGs, one of the first things that pops into a gamer’s mind is The Witcher or Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Crimson Desert feels just like all those games. The way its colorful open world is set with quests and people is reminiscent of Geralt’s journey in The Witcher 3. Similarly, you can take on contracts and quests.

What makes the title feel like Skyrim is the choice surrounding your actions. There is no requirement to carry out positive tasks. You can steal a vegetable cart from a villager, though that will have negative consequences. That is not where the similarities end. In addition to the combat being buttery smooth, it is evidently influenced by the combat system of Ghost of Tsushima.

This is exactly what has players intrigued. It is not just the game’s apparent inspiration from the combat in Ghost of Tsushima, but the way it has set up all other mechanics. Gamers keep finding striking similarities between Crimson Desert and their favorite RPGs, be it Ghost of Tsushima, World of Warcraft, or Skyrim. The Korean title is an amalgamation of all the best features from each of these games.

It prompts the question of whether it will establish the next big RPG, in the way Skyrim defined RPGs. The gameplay, the graphics, and the visuals all look to make it one of the biggest titles in the world. However, it also has some fans worried. They think that similar to Cyberpunk 2077, the game has too much going on at the same time. If not done well, it can go south just as easily as it happened with the former.
