The Call of Duty franchise has been one of the biggest names in the gaming industry, with Modern Warfare being its most popular series. The original series that ended with Modern Warfare 3 continues to be one of the greatest stories not just in CoD history, but with gaming entirely. When fans thought that was the end of the series, Call of Duty brought it back in 2019, with the Modern Warfare reboot.

As we approach the third Modern Warfare reboot, a fascinating question arises. Will Modern Warfare III be the final game in the series? The answer might leave you surprised.

The 2019 Modern Warfare reboot used characters and some plotlines from the original series. Characters such as Captain John Price, Gaz, Soap, and Ghost came back. And with Modern Warfare III, another character returns in the form of Vladimir Makarov. Surely, the third game wraps up the series, right? It would not be entirely wrong to think so. However, Call of Duty narrative director Brian Bloom confirmed Modern Warfare III will not be the end.

The first Modern Warfare series was three games long. Since the reboot is based on the series, it would be a smart prediction to make. However, it is important to realize that the storyline from the first series only came to the reboot at the end of Modern Warfare II. Task Force 141 identified the threat of Makarov at the end of Modern Warfare II. A single game to play out his plotline feels too short for Call of Duty. Even if they manage to do so, doing so with just a year of development will be a big hill to climb.

It is important to remember that even with the original series, devs chose two games to play the whole story out. With the rise of Makarov in Modern Warfare 2 and then his subsequent downfall in Modern Warfare 3 felt like it was not rushed. Instead, if Call of Duty chose to end with Modern Warfare III, the ending might be rushed.

It might just be for the best if Call of Duty does not end with Modern Warfare III. With fans already angry at the game feeling like an over-priced DLC, a rushed story might make things worse. It will be fascinating to see how Modern Warfare III plays out, especially with Makarov joining the fray. Until then, as Captain Joh Price would say, Bravo Six remains dark.
