It’s been a month since Mortal Kombat 1 was released. Since then, players have been spending hours in the game trying to perfect their combat skills. For months before its release, devs NetherRealm Studios had been teasing about the expansive roster in MK1. Along with returning character, some new exciting characters were also set to join.

Along with popular characters like Shang Tsung from the Mortal Kombat universe, players also got to learn about some faces from other franchises being available as playable characters in Mortal Kombat 1. Now, Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, has shared more information about new characters arriving in the game to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the comic series Invincible.

The more recent MK titles expanded the horizons of the game by including special characters from other universes. Characters like the Joker, Robocop, and Rambo have graced the franchise, and players love to play as their favorite characters. Now, Omni-Man from Invincible will be the latest to join the roster in Mortal Kombat 1.

In the official first look shared by Ed Boon on X (formerly Twitter), Omni-Man is seen battling Liu Kang and Scorpion in two different sequences. Omni-Man can be heard saying he considers Liu Kang a worthy challenger and having a sweet time beating up his foe. Further, he makes use of his super speed capabilities to catch Kang off guard and his strength to toss Liu Kang around like a rag doll. The Invincible character is also seen to use a subway train to his advantage to put Scorpion through a serious ordeal.

For the uninitiated, Omni-Man is one of the main characters in Robert Kirkman’s Invincible, who also happens to be the creator of The Walking Dead comics. Players can access Omni-Man by purchasing the Premium Edition or the Kombat Pack.

In an interview with Skybound’s Gina Darling, Ed Boon talked about getting getting Omni Man in the MK1 roster. He said, “First episode, final scene, I was like: Okay, we got ourselves another character for Mortal Kombat.”

While Omni-Man’s addition to Mortal Kombat has become a reality, it’s worth noting that there’s some more exciting additions as well. And much seemingly much needed.

The Mortal Kombat universe’s untapped potential

While Omni-Man’s inclusion in the game’s DLC roster is huge, there is more. Homelander, the antagonist in The Boys and the leader of the Seven is also in the game. And to make things even more interesting, John Cena’s Peacemaker is also a notable entry.

It was recently learned that one of the writers for the Mortal Kombat franchise had an idea for a Mortal Kombat animation movie where DC characters would play a significant role. While Warner Bros brushed aside the pitch, it’s hard to argue that something like a Batman vs Scorpion fight would have lit up the game like Christmas.

Compared to its predecessors, Mortal Kombat 1 has not been able to make a similar impact on the fans yet. However, with more content and DLCs coming in, this opinion could change soon.
