Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was a great success; it broke various earning records set by a number of movies at launch. And eventually, it even managed to reach that 1-billion-dollar mark.

Thanks to the extreme success, the Japanese gaming giant and Universal studio are already planning an entire franchise. But this kind of success does not come from just making a good-looking animated feature. It comes from knowing the source material and using it the way fans want.

And one unique hidden secret shows that the makers of this movie know the franchise better than anyone had thought before.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is hiding a unique secret in it that no one has found yet

Super Mario titles have always been about collectibles; from coins to stars, there has never been a shortage of stuff to collect in the popular games. Aside from being a collectible type, stars also serve as a source of power for characters in Mario’s world.

In Super Mario 64, mostly what the character does is collect stars. And he used their power to unlock new levels—levels that are locked behind huge paintings in Princess Peach’s castle. And once he defeats Bowser, the main villain in that game, Mario gets one ultimate star, which, when returned to Prince Peach’s castle, turns into the princess herself!

This is indeed a very interesting thing to say the least. Interestingly, it has started speculation that in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, the Princess Peach that fans are introduced to is nothing but an all-powerful star. Probably that’s why Bowser wants her. He wants to have her powers, and thus, wants to marry her as well.

This theory was given wind by a bunch of fans who played the Super Mario 64 title. This is highly speculative, as of now, but plausible enough.

The movie may have started a new cinematic universe altogether!

The success of this movie has gone on to start a new franchise itself. There are already talks of a Luigi’s Mansion film in the works. Then, there are rumors that Universal and Nintendo are also talking about entries based on The Legend of Zelda and Metroid franchises. These projects are inevitable given the success of the first movie. What remains to be seen is how long it will take for them to come out.
