The anticipation and the suspense of who amongst the nominees would win the Game of the Year award ended on December 8, 2022, when the director of Elden Ring Hidetaka Miyazaki was handed this trophy. The game was in the run for this award against the likes of God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon: Forbidden West.

When it won, many fans were excited, and many fans accepted it and congratulated the fans of Elden Ring. However, the debate still continues as some are still arguing. Twitter is full of people discussing if God of War: Ragnarok should have won this award.
Did God of War: Ragnarok get robbed of the Game of The Year award by Elden Ring?
Fans of both Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok are still at war over which game is better. Some God of War fans are just finding it unbelievable that Elden Ring managed to win the GOTY award. They have started comparing gameplay mechanics and visuals online.
Many neutral gamers reason that comparing these two games is like comparing apples and oranges, they can’t be more different. FromSoftware’s game is a hardcore action role-playing open-world game that gives players freedom in how they play. On the other hand, God of War: Ragnarok is way more linear in nature and has a semi-open world map.
In Elden Ring players have hundreds of weapons and armor combinations and numerous classes to choose from, while in God of War: Ragnarok players just have what they are given. In God of War, players follow a very straightforward XP-based level-up system, while the other is more souls in nature.
In terms of how good they are at what they do, they are both brilliant, but there’s hardly any point of comparison between them. They both tell intriguing stories, but one takes a more cinematic approach while the other relies on its environment to tell a story.
Fans continue their debate over who should have won the GOTY
Fans and gamers have taken their opinions to Twitter and have been making numerous comments in comparison to Elden Ring and God of War. Some are calling God of War’s story too bad and others are calling Elden Ring too easy. And it seems like this war is not going to see its end soon.

If ragnaroks story wasn't such crap, it would have won.. 2018 was perfect..this game was not.. and we have cory barlog to thank for dumping it on someone else without any direct guidance for story line.. bad move

Elden Ring IMO, you have more agency with your character, more varied attacks, enemy types, the sheer build variety, the complex attributes unique to every enemy/boss/player are just overwhelmingly mind-blowing, also FROM’s bosses are on a whole league by themselves too.

Elden Ring's combat actually requires brain and not random button mashing. So that

The one which requires skill, timing and precision and not the one where you spam buttons to make shiny effects🥱

God of War WAAAYYY more
Combat in Souls games is what throws me out. I thought it was gonna be different in Elden Ring, so I bought it, but it's still the same old and slow combat system.

Combat system for god of war is a lot more advanced an intuitive than Elden ring. Doesn’t mean Elden rings bad because it isn’t ..but god of war is on a level that Elden ring is not able to get to.

Elden ring is easy tbh. Anyone can play the game. But not everyone can play God of War on its highest difficulty. Let alone balanced if you’re not used to fast paced combat and having to fight off multiple enemies at the same time.
