The God of War franchise is regarded as one of the best PlayStation franchises. Kratos’ journey from being a Spartan soldier and demigod to becoming the God of War, to ultimately wrecking Olympus and killing all the gods can be described as long, bloody, brutal, and heartbreaking. And after leaving that life behind, Kratos ventured into Norse mythology, where he unwillingly got into conflict with Norse gods. Enter: God of War 2018, followed by God of War Ragnarok.
The 2018 game won Game of the year, while the hugely successful sequel lost out GOTY to Elden Ring. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that both games are two of the most successful PlayStation titles. However, if we asked you to pick one, which would it be?

The God of War series launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2. Since then, it has grown more and more popular among fans. The PS-exclusive franchise has evolved significantly over the years and Kratos has a cult following. The titles have explored multiple aspects of Norse mythology and developed the lore further. Despite being a sequel to the 2010 GoW III, the 2018 God of War is considered a soft reboot. And the Norse mythology games showed a very different side of Kratos.
God of War Ragnarok was released in 2022 and progresses in the story of Kratos and his son. Unlike the Greek mythology games, which saw Kratos as a ruthless killer, always quick to go to war, the later games showed a more responsible, less trigger-happy God who ironically preferred not to fight. Further, the games explored Kratos as a father. His character arc has since been hailed as one of the best character development moments in video game history.

While many prefer the 2018 GoW, it doesn’t end there. Some not only liked the first one but also weren’t too happy with the sequel.
2018…. I didn’t really like the sequel. It felt like it deviated from things set up in 2018 and ultimately felt like a bit of a downgrade.
If anyone liked it, that’s cool… I just didn’t find myself enjoying it as much as the first one.

Meanwhile, those who picked Ragnarok have made their case. Some see it as an obvious step up to the already successful GoW 2018.
