The latest episode of HBO’s The Last of Us series was released recently. It gave its viewers a lot of new things to be very sad about. Joel was on his supposed deathbed and Ellie’s backstory about finding out her immunity was a tearjerker, too.

These things really made up for a very shocking as well as sad episode. While some fans were left asking for a light-hearted moment, others were left wondering what exactly happened at the end of that flashback.

The episode starts with Ellie putting Joel in a basement and him believing those to be his last moments. In a heat of hopelessness, he pushes her away and asks her to leave him and go to his brother.

Instead of going north, though, she goes back in time and starts remembering her days with her friend Riley. Riley was her childhood friend whom she grew up with. They both are soldiers in training in one of the military quarantine zones.

But Riley disappears at some point, leaving Ellie behind, while Elle deals with bullies and such, Riley is god knows where. One night she returns, and she asks Ellie to follow her. She wants to show her friend a good time and we can already see that these two girls are much more than just a couple of friends.

They care for each other much more than any friend would. They are seen playing video games together, listening to music, wearing Halloween masks, etc.

As time passes, one of the infected shows up and attacks both of them. They fight him off, but end up getting bitten. After this incident, we see them having a hearty conversation as they wait.

They wait for that infection to take them over and turn them into the infected, but as we know for a fact, only one of them changes into a monster.

But what happens after that? Fans seem to be super curious to know the answer as the show does not take time to show us what happens to Rile. Or who kills her once she changes? These questions remain unanswered.

While talking to Variety on this matter, Bella Ramsey specifically said that the makers decided to be creative and leave that to a viewer’s imagination.

“I think sometimes the things that you don’t see are more impactful because then it’s left to your imagination, which can sometimes be even darker than what maybe you’d see on screen. I like that it ends so poetically.,” she said.
