There are certain factors that make a game appealing to the audience. These very elements are what retain the players of a title in the tough gaming market. But some games make dramatic changes or introduce newer mechanisms that alter their previous glorious run. Changes sure are needed and titles of Call of Duty have been doing them quite a lot in the past few years.
But are these changes needed for the COD games? Or, as mentioned earlier, is it hindering its former glorious run?

The rise of Call of Duty in the competitive field of eSports was monumental. The multiplayer modes attracted many top organizations to the COD titles, and rosters were formed around it. Massive prize pools made their way. But what aspects contributed to this rise in popularity?
Apollo, CEO of Karnage Clan, pointed out the key factors that made the franchise an FPS hit. The very first key element that he mentioned was SBMM. For clarity, Skill-Based Match Matching Making (SBMM) is a system that games use, to have a well-sorted matchmaking lobby. However, this method is quite controversial.
Earlier Call of Duty titles did not have this aspect, and according to Apollo, that was a great element of the franchise. The maps were also quite simple and, moreover, added less realism into the mix. The games were considered to have more of an arcade feel. A reward system that embraces a player’s skill through powerful kill streaks is also absent at the moment. Apollo mentioned the traditional Prestige system was a vital element that pushed/ created a mindset among players to rank up.
What made Call of Duty so special was the fact that it offered a fast-paced FPS experience that…
– had random matchmaking (no SBMM)
– had 3-laned, simple maps
– less realism, more arcade-like gameplay
– rewarded players for doing well with powerful killstreaks
– traditional…— Landon – KRNG Apollo (@ApollosMission) April 18, 2023
According to him, map voting and consistent delivery of updates through which players could understand what was really happening in the game are also some things that the game lacks at the moment.
These elements that popularized the Call of Duty franchise need to be brought back, for the game to return to its former glory. But will that happen? No one is sure.
Fans agree to some extent regarding these factors
The Call of Duty fandom sort of agrees with most of these factors, which they too feel are absent from the system.

The CoD Arcade style became more of a discussion topic around the release of Battlefield 3. That was when Realistic gaming really hit the mainstream.

These aspects are purely subjective, but from the responses, it seems that many people miss the flair that the COD franchise gave them when they began their FPS journey.
