HBO Max’s highly acclaimed television series based on Naughty Dog’s Magnum opus, The Last of Us, is garnering high praise from all over the board. According to many, the show is so good that it is breaking the curse of ‘video game adaptations’ and for some, it is bringing back their love for video games.

The host of the renowned Flagrant podcast and comedian, Andrew Schulz, is one of the latter. In one of the newer episodes of his podcast, Andrew revealed that he has been off video games for years. However, the HBO Max show has revitalized his love for the interactive medium and he is basically obsessed with the 2013 PlayStation hit the Last of Us. 

Andrew shared that the Last Of Us would have ‘ruined’ his life

In 2023, HBO Max released a phenomenal drama series, named The Last of Us. The show is directly based on the gaming series by the Naughty Dog studio with the same name. At first, there have been some concerns regarding the series, as many believed that it won’t be able to be respectful towards the source material.

But Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin led adaptation broke all the expectations and delivered a show that is being praised by critics of all manners as well as fans. After the success of the League of Legends adaptations, Arcane and Cyberpunk 2077 show, EdgeRunners, according to fans The Last of Us, was the final drive that was needed to break the decade-old curse of game adaptations. 

The American stand-up comedian, actor, television producer, and podcaster Andrew Schulz couldn’t agree with it more. In a recent episode of his Flagrant podcast, Andrew revealed he has been obsessed with the original game and couldn’t help but play it all the time. However, he is not very proud of it.

“I’ve been playing this game. I’m obsessed. I’m 39 Years Old and I Am Playing fu*king Video games again,” said Andrew. He shared that he had taken a 12-15 year break from video games as he was once very much attached to them. But he thinks if he hadn’t taken a break and played video games for the rest of his life, he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish anything he has right now. Although he exclaimed that he could have become a very popular gamer had he taken the other route. 

That is why it is very fortunate that the show didn’t come out before, or Andrew may not be where he is now. In the episode, Andrew and his co-host made a lot of theories about the show and how the deviations from the source actually contributed to the narrative.

In the end, obsessed or not, Andrew poured the adaptation with high praise and expressed how good the original game was.
